  1. A cartilage is a flexible bluish-white 
  2. connective tissue made up of the protein 
  3. collagen. In cartilaginous fish it forms the 
  4. skeleton; in other vertebrates it forms the 
  5. greater part of the embryonic skeleton, and 
  6. is replaced by bone in the course of 
  7. development, except in areas of wear such 
  8. as bone endings, and the discs between the 
  9. backbones. It also forms structural tissue in
  10. the larynx, nose, and external ear of 
  11. mammals.
